After kicking off a career directing music videos and episodic television, Benji Weinstein’s unique comedic voice quickly vaulted him into the top echelons of advertising. Collaborating with top agencies across the world, Benji honed his signature approach to filmmaking, exploring the humor within moments of humanity and offbeat situations. He’s directed spots for diverse clients such as GEICO, Credit Karma, FedEx, Staples, Subaru, Burger King, Expedia, and VW. His breakout spots for Mi0 water flavoring showcased his smart casting choices and strong storytelling prowess. He commanded the attention of audiences around the globe with spots like Devondale’s ‘Mr. Vanderhoof’ (DDB Melbourne) and Mentos (BBH London).
Weinstein’s work has garnered praise at Cannes, AICP, and The One Show, along with being profiled as one of Creativity’s Top 20 New Directors. Benji took the international awards circuit by storm with his REI “#OptOutside” campaign, winning a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions, the Gold Pencil for Best in Show, along with Gold Pencils in six other categories, three Silver Pencils, and one shortlist at The One Show, in addition to two Wood Pencils at the D&AD Awards. Recent notable work includes Weinstein’s robust campaign for Credit Karma, highlighting the comedic propensity of terrible roommates, lampooning reality-tv tropes, eccentric next door neighbors, and a nail-biting boss, among others.
Benji has stayed prolific during quarantine creating and helming the original short comedy series, “Join Meeting”, about a team of advertising executives working remotely. The idea for a WFH show was born out of an exchange with a group of actors and comedians with whom Benji’s worked with countless times throughout his career. It started as the kernel of an idea but as they got deeper into developing the characters, they found more jokes and a longer story to tell. While the series is set in the world of advertising, it’s not a satire but a relatable look through familiar characters and situations. A mirror and a cultural insight in the ever evolving social norms and practices. The series premiered to critical acclaim leading to a second season with a surprise celebrity cameo.
As a filmmaker, Benji is interested in exploring human truths as a starting place in all of his work and with “Join Meeting,” Benji demonstrated his unique dexterity at putting a magnifying glass to these situations. “When the pandemic hit, we all woke up to an avalanche of new realities, with old truths. I thought it was worth exploring them.” Moreover, “ I was really bored” says Weinstein.
