Known for his high-concept filmmaking style, Jaron Albertin is a commercial, music video, and feature film director based in Brooklyn, NY. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Jaron began his career as an editor and effects artist before launching his career as a director with evocative music videos for Emily Haines, Death from Above 1979, Circlesquare, and Mew to name a few. There’s a cinematic purity to his body of work and his directing style is distinguished by his restraint, clear intent and raw execution.
Jaron found breakout commercial success with the viral sensation “Bike Hero” for Guitar Hero and Droga5. Other notable early successes include, Nike “The Light” for Wieden + Kennedy in which he showcased his unique eye and sense of rhythm and “Lunch Money” for Converse and Anomaly NY where he embraced a breathtaking flipped perspective, making an impression on the audience that lingers long after the first viewing.
Jaron cemented his place amongst advertising’s elite with his timeless classic “Body and Soul” for Dodge Viper. The nostalgia infused love letter to automobiles proudly asks the question, “how can we desire a machine more than another human being,” and won at AICP, the One Show, and Cannes Lions in the process. His collaboration with Under Armour and Droga5 for “I Will What I Want” starred Gisele Bündchen, featuring projections of tweets disparaging Gisele, received the Cannes Lions Cyber Grand Prix and “Get Closer” for Bose, a choreographed film netted six Creative Circle Awards, most notably gold in Direction, Editing, and Use of Music. Additional stand out work includes, “Rose from the Concrete” for Powerade , an intimate story about an inner-city child featuring a voiceover from Tupac Shakur and “Become the Light,” comprised of striking aerial shots from Pyeongchang ski slopes.
Jaron’s debut feature film, Weightless, was released in 2018. Co-written by BAFTA and Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh (writer of Once), Weightless tells the story of a man struggling with mental illness who reconnects with his equally troubled, estranged son. Weightless was featured as the New York Times Critics’ Pick, where critic Ken Jaworowski wrote, “These characters are so strikingly realized that you can’t help but care for them… Jaron Albertin, directing his first feature, cultivates tension in small moments and doesn’t force the drama.”
Jaron made his triumphant return to advertising with a statement piece for Harley Davidson and Droga5 about the meditative state riders experience on their bikes. The spot serves as an invitation to non-riders and a reminder to longtime enthusiasts to experience the freedom of the ride. The simple yet poignant and poetic commentary on modern life is a nod to simpler times, an unclouded mind and the call of the road.
