Nim Kyong Ran
Born and raised in Stockholm, Nim Kyong Ran’s journalist mother imbued in her a love of storytelling that drives her to this day. She explored different art forms from an early age, including six years of acting school, but it was when she discovered the role as a director that everything fell into place. Instead of having to choose between her interests, directing was something that would allow her to combine them all.
A true autodidact, her schooling consisted of biking through the Japanese countryside with no other company but her camera, where she wrote, shot and edited multiple short films, honing her aesthetic and visual language. All the while, she obsessively studied the classics and refined her understanding of character, pace and framing. The interplay of the ingredients that contribute to a successful film are completely under her command in everything she does.
Upon returning to Sweden, Nim continued refining her holistic understanding of the medium – undertaking a six-month long apprenticeship with one of Europe’s top colorists, Oskar Larsson (Triangle of Sadness) simply to better understand the intricacies of grading and color. There, she absorbed knowledge from a variety of directors and cinematographers that came in every day. She then studied under Philippe Tempelman and assisted him on a number of projects around the world.
Nim has created memorable campaigns for client’s such as Koeniggsegg and IKEA, and has been awarded the Roy Andersson prize for “Best New Director”. Her work has been selected for, and featured on, outlets such as 1.4 and The Director’s Library.
