Andre Muir
Biography
Writer and director Andre Muir is the son of Jamaican immigrants, born in Chicago, and now based in Brooklyn, NY. He crafts stories from the ground up with an emotional honesty and layered aesthetic expression, employing an observational, visual language that becomes increasingly participatory as his films unfold. He skillfully builds worlds unfolding with nuance and subtext, regardless of genre.
Muir has quickly emerged as a go-to filmmaker and music video collaborator for some of the industry’s most original musicians. Most recently, he seamlessly weaved intricate storytelling and visual poetry into his short film Blue Eyes with Vic Mensa. The film was featured on WePresent and selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Additionally, through thought-provoking visuals inspired by the words of bell hooks, Muir explored the confines of masculinity in his music video “Smoke Break-Dance” for Mick Jenkins. The film is the director’s second collaboration with the artist, following his music video “Truffles”, which is about the hypocritical transformation of Black suburbia. It was inspired by the photography of Larry Sultan, William Eggleston, and the artwork of Eric Fischl. “Truffles” premiered in competition at SXSW and was also shortlisted for Music Video of the Year at the shots Awards.
In the world of commercials, Muir directed a powerful film for AdCouncil and R/GA’s “Love Has No Labels” campaign with The George Floyd Memorial Foundation, featuring George Floyd’s sister. The film premiered at Cannes Lions and Muir’s seven minute version of the film The Gentle Giant was released on Hulu, winning two Cannes Lions awards, as well as being recognized by Ad Age, ADC Awards, AICP, among others.
Additionally, Muir’s D&AD Award-winning “Black-Owned Friday” for Google featured 25 Black-owned brands from across the country in a shoppable campaign starring Keke Palmer. His Essential Stories for Apple TV+ paints a portrait of professor, journalist, and cinema-lover Jelani Cobb, highlighting his curated film collection that celebrates the contemporary Black filmmaking landscape. This level of informed, intentional styling has led Muir to collaborate with leading agencies such as 72andSunny, Majority, GSDM, and The Martin Agency.
Muir has received numerous accolades, including nominations and awards from the AICP Awards, 1.4 Awards, and Booooooom TV’s Best Short of the Year, among others. His debut film 4 Corners made its online premiere on Director’s Library and went on to win the Audience Award at the Chicago International Film Festival and Best Short Film at the DC International Film Festival.
Additionally, Muir received the Sundance Institute’s Inaugural Uprise Grant Fund for his screenplay The Predicament, a satire of America’s prison-industrial complex. He was also chosen as one of the Sundance Institute’s Annual Screenwriters Intensive fellows.
